She says that when she was a young girl in criminal court. Everyone in the courtroom, except the defendants, did not look like me. She still remembers a court officer telling her mother to sit down and to shut up simply for asking the question, where is her brother. And for that she says
“And I vowed at that point in time, to never allow any mother or grandmother to be disrespected in a courtroom and that the scene that I saw, that the faces that I saw, would obviously reflect more the city that I love and the state that I now represent.”

On January 1, 2019, she became attorney general. After Eric Schneiderman’s retirement, Barbara Underwood was appointed. In August 2020, James declared a state civil lawsuit.
It was registered in New York Supreme Court against the National Rifle Association (NRA). Later on, the association also registered a countersuit against James, quoting statements she made throughout her 2018 campaign.
